Guy Warren (1921 - )
Guy Warren has been influential in the Australian visual arts community throughout a 60 year career as teacher, designer, administrator and painter. Like Flugelman, Warren was a formative influence at the University of Sydney’s Tin Sheds. He has received recognition for his services to the visual arts with the award of a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1999.
From 1994 - 2006 Guy Warren served as Director of the University of Wollongong Art Collection. His immense contribution in this capacity was acknowledged with the awarding of an Honorary Doctorate from the University in 1998.
Warren’s 1985 Archibald Prize winning portrait of his friend and contemporary Bert Flugelman hangs in the Library foyer, in close proximity to sculptures by Flugelman. He has had over 50 solo exhibitions and has works in the national and state galleries of Australia as well as overseas collections.
UOW has acquired a copy of almost all of Warren’s print output in various mediums, such as lithographs, etchings and linocuts, from the 1950s to the present. This extensive representation of his oeuvre is a valuable resource for Creative Arts students and staff.
