Doris Chadwick Collection (D233)

History of School Education in Australasia

Overview

The Doris Chadwick 'History of School Education in Australasia' Collection comprises school magazines and texts, primary readers, curriculum and syllabus material, plus reference material for both students and teachers. The material originates from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Great Britain and the United States, with publication dates ranging from the 1890s to the late 1960s. Nearly 5000 items are included in total.

Many of the texts and readers are representative of the types used by Australian state Departments of Education (or Departments of Public Instruction as some were previously known). As such, the collection represents a valuable source of information for research into the history of school education in Australia.

Background

The collection was compiled during the 1960s and 70s by Doris E. Chadwick (1899-1979), assistant editor of the New South Wales School Magazine from 1929 to 1950 and editor from 1950 to 1959. It was acquired by the Archives in 1999 from OTEN (the Open Training and Education Network), an Institute of the NSW TAFE Commission. Prior to this the collection had been in storage for a number of years.

Contents of the collection

Details of the original arrangement of the collection are unclear. Archives staff have arranged the publications into broad subject categories to facilitate identification and retrieval (e.g. school magazines). These are listed below. Detailed inventories or title lists for some of the series are available online. Inventories for the other series can be provided on request.

Access to the collection

Access to material within the collection is available by appointment. Requestors need to specify beforehand which categories/titles they wish to view, as the selected material will need to be retrieved from storage. Contact the Archivist for more information.
