Library extension project

What is happening now?

We're nearly there! The Library extension is edging ever closer to completion and from Wednesday 17 October our new entrance will be operational. From this time clients will enter and exit the building from its northern side. You will be able to make use of many new features, including new and improved service desks; new express computers in the foyer area; and a spacious new stairwell on the eastern side of the foyer.

The old entrance and foyer area will be closed for ongoing building works. Key Ground Floor services remain open and can be accessed via the Law Library. Several printers (including the colour printer/photocopier) have been relocated to the Photocopying Room. Additional printers will be installed in the Law Library in the near future.

A summary of key impacts is listed below. Don't forget to ask our friendly staff if you need help or would like any further information.

Introduction

The Library is currently working with a local firm of architects, Graham Bell Bowman, to develop a design for an extension to the Library building. The project will extend the northern and eastern sides of the existing building to provide expanded study, computing and collection storage space, and create a more open, transparent structure.

A Development Application was submitted to Wollongong City Council in April 2006. Construction is expected to begin in early November 2006 for completion by February 2008.

We will aim to minimise disruption to Library clients during the construction period. This web page will provide regular updates on the progress of the project.

Project aims

The main aims of the building extension project include:

  • Maximising study space, including an increased number of computer workstations
  • Providing additional space for the expansion of collections
  • Updating the building interiors where possible
  • Continuing to support the University in the attraction and retention of students
  • Creating a flexible design to accommodate changes in learning styles and library services
  • Transforming the current dull and heavy appearance of the building into a transparent, inviting environment

Overall, we anticipate that the design will enhance the Library's reputation for quality service and excellence.

Concept design

An initial concept design was developed in December 2005, and developed further prior to submission of the Development Application in April 2006. A PowerPoint presentation [8.43MB] outlines the main features of the concept design. More detailed plans and elevations will be made available as the project progresses.
