Email #27 - Autumn 2009
Hi there!
Library staff look forward to welcoming new and returning students and staff - a new year, a new session and a new start! There are a number of new online tools for you to use this session, read on to find out more...

New Catalogue launch page

You may have already noticed that there is a new way to launch the catalogue. When you click on Catalogue from our homepage, you will find a new resource finder page. Search the catalogue from the search box located at the top when you are using ‘known’ search terms like title, call number or journal title. To find reading list items placed in Short Loan or e-readings by your lecturer just click the subject code button and type in your subject code.

Search Guru

If you want to search for books and other materials on a topic, but you aren’t sure what you will find, use Search Guru. A good tip is to enter as few search terms as possible - start with a broad search and Search Guru will help you refine the results to relevant items.

Search Guru:
  • Helps you easily refine your search using 'tags' - terms found listed against items in the catalogue - or by publication date, location, or format.
  • Sorts your results by relevance, date or title.
  • Asks "Did you mean?", providing suggestions for spelling variations.
  • Suggests titles recently added to our collection.
  • Allows you to rate or tag items on the catalogue.

New Resources for Assignments pages
The Resources for Assignments pages are now better than ever! Investing in new web-based software has allowed us to create comprehensive, easy to use guides to help you with your studies.
The guides cover a variety of subjects from Aboriginal Studies to Visual Arts, and will help you identify relevant databases, books, websites and other Library resources to use in your research. You can even view short visual demonstrations that show you how to search the different resources, and tips to help you get the most relevant results.

New Databases for 2009

Several new databases available through the Library website:
•    Proquest Central – upgraded from Proquest 5000
•    Naxos Music Library
•    American Geophysical Union Digital Library
•    Images MD
•    Liebert Journals Archive
•    Macquarie Online: Dictionary & Thesaurus
•    Film Indexes Plus – Film reviews and commentary

Laptop locks fitted to all powered desks!

You can now ensure your laptop is safe while away from your individual study space. Every powered study desk has been fitted with a secure lock down point to which you can lock your laptop using your own security cable.

Set up wireless access on your laptop

If you have bought a laptop over the summer break, set up your access to the UOW wireless network. Click here to see instructions or see the Information Desk for help.
If you are still having problems, please see ITS staff in Building 17, Level 1, or come to a help session in the Library in Group Study Room 5, Ground Floor. These sessions run every day during week 1 at 9:30am, 12:30pm and 3.30pm.

Come and get your Library bag

Don't forget to collect your red Library bag from the Loans Desk - a handy size for carrying books, lunch or groceries!

See you in the Library soon!
Warm regards, The team at the Library
