If you know the exact title

  1. Select title search
  2. Type in the exact title
  3. Check the location, call number and status boxes to find the item in the Library collection

If you don't have an exact title OR only have a topic area

  1. Select advanced keyword search
  2. Type in keywords from your topic
  3. Combine your keywords with AND to find catalogue records that contain all of your keywords

    e.g. cognition AND intellect**

  4. To retrieve variations of your keyword use the truncation symbol **

    e.g. intellect** will retrieve intellect, intellectual, intellective

Catalogue search tips:

  • Too many hits? Add another keyword e.g. cognition AND intellect** and child**
    OR
    Use the limit functions in advanced keyword search e.g. limit by publication date, format, location

Found a useful reference?

Some databases do not provide the fulltext of the article. To locate these articles, you will need to search the catalogue to determine if the Library holds the journal title(s) either in print or electronically on another database.

Database search tips:

  • Break your topic into keywords and/or phrases. The search strategy worksheet will help you
  • Consider alternative keywords or spelling variations
  • To narrow your search combine your keywords with AND to find records that contain all your keywords

    e.g. develop** AND gifted child**

  • To broaden your search combine your keywords with OR to find records that contain either of your keywords

    e.g. gift** OR talent**

  • Use truncation to retrieve variations of your keyword. Symbols vary between databases

    e.g. develop** will retrieve developed, developing, development, developmental

    The Australian Deafness Directory has been compiled to provide a quick and accurate guide to many organisations and services of and for deaf people and people with a hearing impairment in Australia.
  • Educator's Reference Desk - Disabilities, Gift Education and Special Education
    This resource collection includes Internet sites, educational organizations, and electronic discussion groups on various topics including Disabilities, Gift and Special Education.
  • ERIC
    The ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) Network is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and provides access to a huge collection of education material. The ERIC Clearinghouses collect literature on and provide a variety of services and resources in specific subject areas - such as this one.
  • National Center for Learning Disabilities (U.S.)
    This site from the US includes resource information, research news, information and tips on learning disabilities and more.
  • Special Education Resources on the Internet
    This extensive set of links is organised into topic areas such as general disabilities information, parents and educator's resources, special education discussion groups, special needs and technology and more.
  • SPELD NSW
    A non-profit-making association of parents and professioanl persons interested na dinvolved in advancing the education and general wel-being of children and adults with specific learing difficulties
