Phrase searching requires quotation marks, e.g. "city to surf"
Boolean operators need to be included in angled brackets, e.g. computers <or> laptops
You can ‘nest’ searches by using parentheses, e.g. price <NEAR/5> (computers <OR> laptops) <AND> <NOT> "made in China"
There is extensive held on the system and also an FAQ. One item of the FAQ that you need to be aware of is this.
There are many technical problems associated with working with old newspapers and when digitising microfilm. Due to the age of the source material, it is not possible to guarantee that the system will be able to search for and find every word or term that may have appeared in the original newspaper. For example, if the original newspaper page is damaged or if the original microfilm is of poor quality then the damaged text is lost. For this reason, the 'Browse Archive' (available once you have subscribed) option is a valuable tool if the text search does not return the results you expect.
