Evaluation criteria will help you determine if you need to modify your search strategy. In the table below we have provided some evaluation criteria and useful techniques to help you modify your search if needed.

Is the information relevant to your topic, question or purpose?

Try using

  • narrower keywords
  • the Boolean Operator ‘AND’ to combine keywords
  • synonyms
  • a specific-field search e.g. subject search (use the database Help for details)

  • a different search tool (e.g. a different database or catalogue)
Are you finding enough information?

Try using

  • broader keywords
  • synonyms
  • truncation
  • keywords (use database Help for details)
  • the Boolean Operator ‘OR’ to combine your keywords
Did you find too many references?

Try using

  • additional keywords
  • the Boolean Operator ‘AND’ to combine keywords narrower keywords
  • a phrase search (use database Help for details)
  • a specific-field search e.g. Subject search (use database Help for details)
  • limits e.g. by fulltext, scholarly, date, article type, language etc (use database Help for details)
