Reference resources

Reference resources can be loosely divided into Fact Tools and Finding Tools:

Fact Tools:
Provide brief factual information on such as definitions, statistics, biographies, brief facts about countries or business. They can be useful for gathering background information on your topic.

Examples:

Dictionaries
Good for definitions of terms and concepts.
Can help with spelling and word usage.

Almanacs
Produced annually, provide factual information, brief summaries, tables and statistics.

Encyclopedias
Provide overviews and summaries on various topics.
Excellent for finding basic background information on a topic

Handbooks
A collection of topical and practical information. Consist of statistics, facts and procedures relating to a particular subject area.

Print Indexes and Databases provide searchable lists of references to information such as journal articles on particular topic areas.

Directories
Good for locating contact details
e.g. people, organizations or institutions that are knowledgeable about your topic.
