Develop your search strategy

Once you have all your keywords you can build a search strategy to type into a database. To retrieve the best results you will need to use Boolean Operators. Boolean Operators (AND OR) are used by databases, the catalogue and even the Internet. It is a way for the database to understand how to combine your keywords.

Boolean Operator: AND

The word AND is used to reduce the number of search results by retrieving only those records that contain all of the keywords. The AND connector is used between keywords with a different meaning.

For example:

  • A database search on the keyword children finds 2,395 records
  • A database search on the keyword advertising finds 1,000 records

The search results will only include those that include both of the keywords, children and advertising, i.e. 525 records.
