HERDC – annual Higher Education Research Data Collection
Each year, universities are required to submit to the Australian Government Department of Industry, Innovation Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE) research income and research publications data through the Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) process. Data submitted through the HERDC process is used to determine funding allocations to individual universities through a range of grant programs.
DIISRTE releases the HERDC specifications document annually which provides a guideline to universities for inclusion of data in the HERDC submission. HERDC data is the foundation for a number of Government Research block Grants and is reviewed in consultation with universities and other relevant stakeholders on an annual basis. Using the HERDC Specifications as a guide, all research publications entered into the RIS system are individually assessed by UOW Library staff to determine their status for inclusion in the HERDC submission.

ERA – Excellence in Research Australia
The Australian Research Council (ARC) is responsible for administering ERA. The aim of ERA is to identify and promote excellence across the full spectrum of research activity in Australia’s higher education institutions. The first full ERA process was completed in 2010 and documented in the ERA 2010 National Report. The report provides a rich picture of research in Australian universities by discipline. A second round of ERA was conducted in 2012. ERA outcomes are included as a key measure of performance across the university sector. Data for ERA is derived from the records entered into University’s Research Information System (RIS).
