Keep up to date

Your research area is constantly changing with the addition of new knowledge and research methodology. Keep up to date with the latest literature and research information via:

Email alerts

Databases and journal publisher web sites are regularly updated as additional material is published. Email alerts are one mechanism for researchers to be notified as material becomes available. Alerts are available from many databases and publisher web sites.

Databases generally include journals from many different publishers while a publisher's web site will only include its own journals.

Email alerts are:

  • time saving - no need to repeat searches
  • comprehensive - alerts are generated for any database selected
  • delivered to your desktop - quick and easy access to the latest literature

Email alerts are created using:

  • Keywords
  • Authors
  • Table of Contents for selected journals
  • Citation alert (for some databases)
  • Combination of the above

Setting up alerts

Databases and publishers usually require free registration. Alerts may be set up in databases or directly from the publisher's web site. In the first instance, use the databases to set up your alerts. If you need alerts from more specialised sources, such as conferences or societies, use the publishers' web site.

Publisher Web sites

A list of publishers is available from WWW Virtual Library: Publishers.

Google Alerts

Google Alerts provide a daily, weekly or as-it-happens service. Use this service for information on developing news stories, keeping current on industry information or information on your area of interest. Note: do not limit your alerts to Google, many research articles are only found in databases.

RSS feeds

RSS feeds is a new technology that allows viewing of updated content on a website. Content may be news or information from databases.

The advantage is many feeds from databases are collected in the one place, however at this stage, not all databases provide RSS feeds.

Library Databases page

The Library trials many new databases and purchases new databases. Use the Databases page to maintain an awareness of current trials and view a listing of new databases.

To discover the latest database purchase for your faculty, click on your faculty link, scroll down the page and locate the  icon.

Newsletters

The Research & Innovation Newsletter is a bimonthly newsletter providing staff and students with information on research related events and developments across campus. Each newsletter contains a section from the Library. You will find hints and tips, upcoming events and  information on research support. Many faculties also produce a newsletter which often includes information from the Library.
