EndNote filters import and download instructions

To directly export into your EndNote Library:

1. Mark references to be saved
2. Click on Marked Items
3. Click on Citation Tools 
4. Select the EndNote radio button, Export
5. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click on Open

1. Click on the title of each record to be saved. This needs to be done separately for each record.
2. Next to Display Formats click on EndNote.
3. At the File Download window, click on Open.
4. Select the appropriate EndNote library, click on Open.

1. Click on the abstract of each record to be exported. This needs to be done separately for each record.
2. Click on Download to Citation Manager.
3. Select EndNote from Choose a Citation Manager Format.
4. Click on Download.
5. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click on Open.

2. Go to Print/Save/Email at the bottom of the screen.
3. From the Select Format menu, choose Export Format.
4. Click on Format for Print or Save.
5. Use your browser's menu to save the page as a plain text (.txt) file.
6. To download the records go to File/Import in your EndNote Library

2. Click on Download to Citation Manager.
3. Next to Include choose Citation and abstract for this article
4. Choose EndNote for Citation Manager or File Format
5. Click on Download Chapter Metadata
6. Choose Open it
7. Select the appropriate EndNote library, click Open.

2. Click on Export/Save and ensure radio button in a format compatible with EndNote is selected under 'Export saved records'

5. Save the records as default type RIS Formatted File
6. To download the records go to File/Import in your EndNote Library and use the Reference Manager (RIS) Import Option
7. Adjust individual records and select the appropriate Reference type, (eg. Journal article) as all records will import as a ‘Generic’ Reference type

Alternatively from Step 5:
Save the records as a .txt file and manually change the first field TYPE - GEN to TYPE - JNL (or as appropriate). This will import the references into the correct Reference Type. Adjustment of records may still be required.

 ASCE Publications
Use inbuilt Reference Manager (RIS) import filter

1. Mark the references to be exported.
2. Select EndNote RIS from the Article Options drop down menu.
3. Select Go.
4. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click Open.

1. Search for the references to be saved.
2. Mark them by clicking on Marked (at the bottom of the search results screen).
3. Select Tagged Text next to Show on the screen formatted as and click on Show
4. Use your browser’s Save As function to save the records as a plain text (*.txt) file
5. To download the records go to File/Import in your EndNote Library

1. Mark the references to be saved
2. Select EndNote + Abstracts from the Send drop down menu at the bottom of the screen
3. Click on Send
4. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click Open

NOTE: You must mark and download records one page at a time and & Journal titles must say Null

6. In Save tab, set radio button to Direct Export to EndNote, Procite or Reference Manager
7. Click on Save.
8. Select appropriate EndNote Library.
9. Click on Open.

Results need to be saved in a folder   

1. Click on Add to folder (this may be done for individual articles or click on Add '1-20' on right hand of citation)
2. Go to Folder view
3. Select individual articles or tick the 'Select all' check box          
4. Click on the Export icon
5. Click radio button for direct export to EndNote, ProCite or Reference Manager
6. Click on Save
7. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click on Open.

2. Click on Export Selected Citations (at the bottom of the page)
3. Select Abstract and citation from Export Type drop down menu and change the File Type if you are not using a PC
4. Click on Go
5. Ensure the file is saved as a plain text file (.txt) by changing the Save as type: to All Files
6. To download the records go to File/Import in your EndNote Library

3. Check RIS/EndNote/ProCite/ Reference Manager

Mark the references to be saved by clicking Update List and then the My List icon

To save to file:

1. Click on Save To File
2. Save the file as a plain text file (.txt)
3. To download the records go to File/Import in your EndNote Library

To directly export into your EndNote Library:

1. Click on Export To Reference Software
2. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click on Open

1. Add items to folder
2. Select Folder

8. To download the records go to File/Import in your Endnote library

Windows users:

1. Click on View Abstract/Citation for each record you wish to export. This needs to be done separately for each record.
2. Click on Export Citation.
3. Click on the EndNote radio button and then Download Citation.
4. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click on Open.

Mac users:

1. Click on View Abstract/Citation for each record you wish to export. This needs to be done separately for each record.
2. Click on Export Citation.
3. Click on the Endnote radio button and then Download Citation.
4. Select option “Save to Disc” and save to your desktop.
5. Open your Endnote library
6. Select File and then Import.
7. Select the document you wish to import.
8. Use the import option “Endnote Import”.
9. Select Import.

 Emerald
Download filter | Instructions

For EndNote XI use the inbuilt Emerald import filter

1. Mark references
2. Click on Add to my list
3. Click on Marked list on the left side
4. Click on Download (ASCII)
5. Save the file as text only (*.txt)

Emerald downloads contain an extra tab which needs to be removed before importing into EndNote 
 6. Open saved search using Word 
 7. Click on Windows Show/Hide icon to locate tab 
 8. Copy (Ctrl C) tab which shows as an arrow
 9. Click on Edit
 10.Click on Replace
 11. Paste tab into top entry box (Ctrl V). Leave second entry  box blank
 12. Click on Replace All
 13. Save Word document as text only (*.txt)
Import into EndNote as normal

1. Mark the references to be saved
2. Click on Download
3. Check RIS/EndNote/ProCite/ Reference Manager
4. Click on Download
5. Click on Open
6. Select EndNote library
7. Click Open

To directly export into your EndNote Library:

1. Mark references to be saved
2. Click on Marked Items
3. Click on Citation Tools

2. Ensure that the setting in the "View as" box is Headline, Lead Paragraph, plus Indexing otherwise the records will not be saved in the correct format for importing.
3. Click on the disk icon (Format for Saving) at the top of the results
4. Use File/Save as from your web browser to save the file as a plain text file (.txt)
5. To download the records go to File/Import in your EndNote Library

 FirstSearch
There are a number of filters in the EndNote filters Manager for FirstSearch Databases including: Article First, Eco and WorldCat

Note: Access to FirstSearch databases is restricted to academic staff and postgraduate researchers

1. Mark references to be saved
2. Click on Export
3. Choose Marked Records next to Export
4. Ensure the radio button is on EndNote
5. Click on Export
6. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click on Open
7. Select the corresponding EndNote filter e.g. Article First (OCLC)

To directly export into your EndNote Library:

1. Mark references to be saved
2. Click on Marked Items
3. Click on Citation Tools 
4. Select the EndNote radio button, Export
5. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click on Open

 Google Scholar
No filter required

1. Perform Google Scholar search
2. Click on Scholar Preferences
3. At Bibliographic Manager, use the radio button for Show links to import citations into and select EndNote from the dropdown menu
4. Click on Save Preferences

Import into EndNote appears under each reference in your search results.

1. Click Import into EndNote
2. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click on Open

 HighWire Press
No filter required

1. Mark the references to be exported.
2. Click on Download to Citation Manager and then Go
3. A new window will open. Click on Download Citations to Citation Manager in the box which indicates how many records have been selected
4. A new window will open. Choose EndNote from the options on the left hand side
5. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click on Open

Note: Only one page of results can be downloaded at a time

1. Mark the references to be exported.
2. Click on View Selected Items at the bottom of the page.
3. Choose the preferred option of Citation or Citation and Abstract in the first Download Citations drop down menu.
4. Choose EndNote, ProCite, RefMan from the second drop down menu.
5. Click on the arrows next to the second drop down menu
6. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click on Open.

Mark the records to be saved. From the Selected drop down menu, choose Download Citations, click on Go.

To save to file:

1. Choose a format: Plain Text
2. Select the Citation and Abstract radio button
3. Select the Download file radio button
4. Click on Go
5. Click on Save, save the file as a plain text file (.txt)
6. To download the records, go to File/Import in your EndNote Library

To directly export into your EndNote Library:

1. Choose a format: EndNote Direct Export
2. Select the Citation and Abstract radio button
3. Select the Download file radio button
4. Click on Go > Open
5. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click on Open

Only one Informit database can be searched at a time. Only 50 references can be downloaded at a time.

To directly export into your EndNote Library:

1. Mark references to be saved
2. Click on Save
3. Radio buttons default to the correct options
4. Under Output Format, choose EndNote Direct
5. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click on Open

 Using the inbuilt EndNote Import filter

1. Mark the references to be saved.
2. Choose Long Labels under Label Format.
3. Choose EndNote under Output Format.
4. Save your records as a plain text (.txt) file
5. To download the records go to File/Import in your EndNote Library
6. Use the inbuilt EndNote Import filter

1. Mark the references to be exported.
2. Click on Export (EndNote)
3. Select the appropriate Endnote Library, click Open

1. Mark the records to be saved.

2. Go to the Results Manager at the bottom of the screen.
3. Under Results tick Selected Results.

5. Under Result Format tick Ovid.
6. Under Action click on the Save button.
7. At next screen, select the Windows or Macintosh style linefeeds and click on the Continue button.
8. When prompted, Save the records as a Text File (*.txt).
9. To download the records go to File/Import in your EndNote Library

Importing one citation at a time

1. Click on the article title
2. Click on Export this Citation
3. Select EndNote, Procite, Reference Manager
4. Open and select the EndNote library

Importing multiple citations– you must first register for a MyJSTOR account to save citations

1. Use the check boxes to select the citations
2. Click on Save citation(s) (Requires login) located at the top of the citation list

2. Click on Download
3. Select RIS (e.g. for EndNote) from the drop-down menu. Click on Go
4. Save the file as a plain text file (.txt)
5. To download the records go to File/Import in your EndNote Library

2. Click on Folder has items
3. Click on Save to disk
4. Click on the tab Bibliographic Manager
5. Choose the Citations in Direct Export format radio button
6. Click on Save
7. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click Open

Note: Not all Journals available on this database permit exporting. You need to check in the top right (under the Blue Boxed heading Abstract). You need to look for Export Citation

2. Click on each reference separately - either the Abstract

4. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click Open

Mark the records to be saved, scroll to the Results Manager at the bottom of the page.

To save to file:

1. Under Result Format select Reprint/Medlars
2. Click on Save
3. Save the file as a plain text file (.txt)
4. To download the records go to File/Import in your EndNote Library

To directly export into your EndNote Library:

1. Under Result Format select Direct Export
2. Click on Save

Mark the records to be saved or directly exported.

Note: using the direct export option enters the author's first name followed by the surname, for example Mary Smith will appear as Mary, Smith rather than Smith, Mary. Ensure you adjust each record if using this method.

Click on Export

To save to file:

1. Click on Download in a format compatible with ProCite, EndNote, Reference Manager and RefWorks
2. From the new browser window, select File/Save As and save as a plain text file (.txt)
3. Change the drop down menu Save as Type to Text File (*.txt)
4. To download the records go to File/Import in your EndNote Library and use the ProQuest Import Option

To directly export into your EndNote Library:

1. Click on Export directly to ProCite, EndNote or Reference Manager
2. Select the appropriate EndNote Library, click on Open

Mac users:

1. Mark records to be saved
2. Select Export > Export directly to ProCite, EndNote or Reference Manager
3. Drag file from Downloads folder to desktop
4. Within EndNote, go to File/Import, browse for the file and select the inbuilt Proquest Import Option

For the instructions below to work, you must select PubMed from the Databases page, then the PubMed link from the bottom of the screen (within the links including, contacts, disclaimer etc) Note: Keywords and subject headings are not imported.

2. In the Display menu bar (grey area above the results), select Medline from the drop down menu (default shows 'Summary').
3. Still in the Display menu bar, select File from the Send to drop down menu (far right).
4. Save as a .txt file.
5. To download the records go to File/Import in your EndNote Library, and choose Import Option - PubMed (NLM).
