Q1: Can I install Endnote on my computer?
A: Current UOW staff and students may install and run EndNote on their personally owned computers only. If you wish to install EndNote on your work computer, please contact ITS: its [at] uow.edu.au.
Q2: Where can I get a copy of EndNote?
A: You can borrow a copy of EndNote from the Library's Short Loans Desk.

Q3: Which version should I use?
A: EndNote X1 (also known as EndNote 11).
- EndNote X1 is the version installed on the public computers in the Library.
- EndNote X1 is the version used for training and support by the Library staff.
- EndNote X1 is the latest version available from the Library Short Loans, for Macintosh users.
Q4: What are the requirements for EndNote X1?
A: Microsoft Windows: Microsoft Windows 2000 SP3, XP SP2, or Vista; and Microsoft Word 2000, XP, 2003, or 2007
Apple Macintosh: Macintosh OS 10.3.6+ or 10.4.x; and Microsoft Word X or 2004
EndNote X1 is compatible with Microsoft Windows Vista. There are compatibility issues with Microsoft Windows Vista and previous versions of EndNote.
Q5: How do I know if my version of Microsoft Word is compatible with EndNote?
A: The official EndNote site details this information for Windows and Macintosh users.
Q6: In Windows Vista why can't I modify and save my style?
A: EndNote X1 and earlier: Where (n) is the version number.
Windows: C:\Program Files\Endnote (n)\Styles
Mac: Macintosh HD:Applications: Endnote (n):Styles
Place a copy of this folder in your "Documents" (called "My Documents" in Windows 2000/XP) folder, or any location where you have full read-write access.
Restart EndNote and go to the EndNote Preferences. On Windows, Preferences can be found at the bottom of the "Edit" menu. On an OS X system, the Preferences can be found in the "EndNote" menu. Then go to the Folder Locations option.
For the Styles folder option, select the "Select Folder" option and then select the new location for your styles. Click Save, then Click Ok.
Note: You can repeat the above steps for the "Filters" folder and the "Connections" folder, if required.

Q7: I'm trying to connect to the UOW Library catalogue so that I can download records directly into EndNote, but I can't get a connection. What's wrong?
A: Try the connection file released by EndNote (5/10/2007).
Q8: Where can I find an import filter for items in the UOW Library catalogue?
A: Use the "ENdNote Import" filter supplied with EndNote X1.
Q9: Where can I find additional import filters and connection files?
A: You can download them from either the Library's EndNote filters import and download instructions page, or from the EndNote site. Other sources of these files can be found at UQ Library.
Q10: Why can’t I connect to Library databases through my EndNote Library?
A: UOW users must authenticate to the UOW network border before being granted access to external sites via EndNote. To authenticate to the UOW network border, visit: https://www.uow.edu.au/cgi-bin/firewallopen.cgi
Q11: After installing EndNote and opening Microsoft Word, I don't see the EndNote toolbar or commands under the Tools menu. How can I fix this?

Q 12: Why does coding appear in my Word document where my in-text citation should appear? For example: {ADDIN EN.CITE
<EndNote><Cite><Year>2004</Year><RecNum>3}
A: In Word 2000/2002/2003: From the Tools menu, select Options / View tab and uncheck Field Codes
For Macintosh users, from the Word menu, select Preferences…/View and uncheck Field Codes
Within Word 2007 go to the Office icon in the upper left, and click on "Word options" at the bottom left of this window Click on the Advanced option on the left hand side and scroll down to "Show Document Content". Uncheck the item titled "Show field codes instead of their values" and click OK. The document should now appear normal.
For Macintosh users: In Word, go to the "Word" menu, and select "Preferences". On the "View" menu, uncheck the box named "Field Codes". Click OK. The document should now appear normal.
