Citation - may also be referred to as a reference. Information which enables you to locate an item; elements such as author, date, title, year, URL, publication and publisher.
Cite While You Write™(CWYW) - will format references, figures, tables and bibliographies in the style chosen as you write your paper.

.DATA folder - is automatically created when inserting files in the object or image field of the reference window. If you move your library to a different location the .DATA folder also needs to be moved.

EndNote - is a bibliographic management program that enables you to store references, search and download citations from electronic sources, insert citations into Microsoft Word documents, and create bibliographies automatically in a wide range of referencing styles.

Field codes - are hidden around and inside your citations in Word. They allow EndNote to format the citations within Word. Publishers sometimes require authors to remove field codes from submissions, refer to FAQs.
Forced Separation - the vertical bar (|) is used to edit the bibliography style template. It divides the citation into sections that are not dependant on other parts of the citation. These sections may or may not contain information.

Import filters - instruct the EndNote software in which fields to place the imported data. EndNote comes with many in-built filters. From the File menu select import / import options / other filters to view the complete selection.
Instant formatting - as you work in Word adding citations, EndNote will format citations, format and create a bibliography while you type in the selected output style.

Library - in the context of EndNote, Library refers to your database of references.
Library window - when you open EndNote you see the library window which contains a listing of references.
Link adjacent text - the diamond (♦) is used to edit the bibliography style template. It links parts of the citation together to act as a single unit. If there is no data for this field, for example an edition statement, the associated punctuation will not appear.

Output styles - this will determine how the citations and the bibliography are formatted. They are similar to a template, dictating how the punctuation and style of the text will appear. For example an output style may be Harvard.

Reference - sometimes referred to as a citation. Information which enables you to locate an item; elements such as author, date, title, year, URL, publication and publisher.
Reference types - when adding a new reference, EndNote assigns a default reference type, for example a journal article. To change the default, click the Reference Type drop down menu.
Reference window - the screen that contains details of your reference. It is also the window for entering data.

Singular/Plural term separator - the caret (^) is used to edit the bibliography style template. It will automatically assign singular or plural labels. For example, editor or editors.
Style manager - see output styles. To view the output styles select the Edit menu / output styles / open style manager.
Style template - the citation, bibliography and footnotes have a template panel. The template may be edited to reflect the particular output style required. To edit the template select Edit menu / output styles / edit and select the style for editing.

Term lists - may be used for authors, journals and keywords, however additional term lists may also be created. They help maintain consistency and accuracy.
Title capitalisation - EndNote can make global changes to title capitals within the style template window.
