ERA – Excellence in Research Australia

The Australian Research Council (ARC) is responsible for administering ERA. The aim of ERA is to identify and promote excellence across the full spectrum of research activity in Australia’s higher education institutions. The ERA reports provide a rich picture of research in Australian universities by discipline. ERA outcomes are included as a key measure of performance across the university sector. Data for ERA is derived from the records entered into University’s Research Information System (RIS).

Changes to publications data collection

Findings from the Review of Research Policy and Funding Arrangements (Watt Review, July 2015) and the subsequent initiatives announced in the National Innovation Science Agenda (December 2015), have resulted in changes to the Research Block Grants calculations.

The Watt Review considered that "Publications are a very important measure of academic productivity. However, the incentives to publish embedded in almost all other areas of the academic research system, such as academic promotions and global university rankings, are far stronger than the impact of less than 10 per cent weighting in the current RBG".

Upon this advice, publications have been removed from both the Research Block Grants calculations and the Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) from 2016.
